This post is definitely long overdue and I did not want to skip it. Even though it is the new year and I went on this trip at the end of 2017, I still wanted to write about our stay in Santorini! Santorini is one of the most sought out travel destinations. Every few weeks, I will see someone on social media posting about their travels to Santorini and I have to say, I understand why it is such a hot spot! It is a beautiful island, with the most picturesque views, and wonderful food!
How we got to Santorini
From Mykonos, we took a ferry to Santorini which took about 2.5-3 hours. It stops a few times along the way to other islands, so that is why the ride takes a bit more time. I tend to get a bit sea sick, so I was a little nauseous on this ferry ride. But the ferry offers food and has a bar inside, which is great because if you don’t mind boat rides, you can really enjoy your time before arriving. The cost was 87.51 euros per ticket, one way.
Where we stayed
The hotel we stayed at is called Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort. It is located in Megalohori, which is south of Santorini. It is a small town, and is situated in a little neighborhood that has a few little restaurants. Our suite was lovely and the property itself was gorgeous as well. It was a large living space that had a living room, a small kitchen area, a luxurious bathroom, a spacious bedroom, a walk in closet, and a relaxing hot tub out in the back. It was the perfect place for two people to stay, or even a small family.
Every morning, we would eat breakfast by the pool, and enjoy the gorgeous view from their Pergola Pool Restaurant. The buffet style breakfast was delicious and had something for everyone. On the first night of our arrival, we had dinner at their Alati Restaurant, which is has seafood and Greek cuisine.
Where To Eat
Obelix
The best gyro’s we had during our whole trip were at a place called Obelix in Fira. They were delicious and extremely cheap, so Sarah and I both had two each! I highly recommend you pick one, or two, up if you are walking around Fira.
OVAC
One of the fanciest and most beautiful dinners that we had while in Santorini was at OVAC, which is located in Imerovigli. The views are incredible and the atmosphere is lovely. I ordered the risotto and it was incredible. OVAC has a very romantic vibe and is a great place if you are celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or birthday. I highly recommend this as a splurge meal!
Gelato in Oia
As you all know, I can’t go anywhere without getting some gelato. So while in Oia, Sarah and I stopped by a little shop to get some delicious gelato while admiring the gorgeous views!
Where To Visit
Oia
Oia is the place that everyone thinks of when they visit Santorini. Picture all white buildings with blue roofs and a clear view of the water and sky! This is definitely the number one area to visit while in Santorini. I would recommend staying in Oia as well, since it is where all the restaurants and shops are!
Imerovigli
Imerovigli is a village in Santorini and is known for their sunsets. It is definitely a must visit location while you are in Santorini. It is next to Fira, and has some great sights to visit. You can find some gorgeous churches and beautiful architecture in this village. This is where we had our delicious dinner at OVAC, so I definitely recommend stopping there during your visit.
Fira
Fira is the capital of Santorini and is also known to have amazing view of the island. We went to Fira and Imerovigli in one day and walked around visiting the village. If you are into private tours, or sunset cruises, this is a great place to do that! One of the highlights I loved most about Fira was seeing the old donkey trail. While is doesn’t smell so great, the donkeys are all lined up on steps and are wearing the most gorgeous head pieces. You can even pay to ride them for a tour, but they are too cute to do that! Since you have to walk down a lot, once you reach the bottom of Fira, you can see the cable cars that will take you all the way back up to the top. The line is quite long though, as many people don’t want to hike back up.
I hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that you visit Santorini! It is truly a beautiful island and an experience I will never forget!
